Welcome to the Giga Guy Game Blog!

Welcome to the Giga Guy Game blog! Here, I will post updates of my current work in progress, Giga Guy, a simple Mega Man clone for PC. Any time I have something to upload, I will post it here, be it news, pictures, screen shots, possibly even playable builds. I hope to bring you the most enjoyable game that I can!

What is Giga Guy?
Giga Guy is a Mega Man clone (not quite a 'fan game', since Mega Man, nor any of the characters appear in this game). The same format is used: Pick a boss from a stage selection screen, fight your way to them, defeat them, gain their power, and move onto the next boss, hoping the weapon you've obtained will be something they are weak against.

Sooo... What's the difference from Mega Man?
Obvious things will be different; characters, story, controls (will be as close as possible, but due to the nature of the program being used to make the game, it won't be possible to get it perfect), level design and layout. Mega Man games have been lacklustre in story since the first, but it's understandable to see how, considering the age of the game. Regardless, one of my goals is to have levels tell stories of the bosses and world you're in, instead of being a simple path to a tough fight.

Why did you start this project?
Plain and simple; I love Mega Man games. Always have. Mega Man 2 was one of the first games I ever beat. I've always thought it would be fun to make a Mega Man game, either entirely, or just levels for one. With technology today, it's possible and easy to do so without intense programming knowledge. But, as much as I love Mega Man, I also realize it's a little silly at times. As such, I wanted to create a game that was both an homage and a spoof of Mega Man. Thus, Giga Guy was born. My ultimate goal is to create a Mega Man style game that has elements of Earthbound with it; that is, a mostly light hearted game on the surface, with some serious thematic undertones and symbolism you can only pick up if you read between the lines.

The project is ambitious, but I hope I can create something everyone can enjoy! Check back now and then for updates! And just to tide you over, a screenshot of the current build-in-progress!

  1. Hi there. You caught my attention today at /v/. I just wanted to say that I too wanted to make game similar to megaman in my "way". Well... I did, but it turned out to be real junk not worth showing anyone, but every now and then I like to sink in thoughts about remaking it. Just not long ago I had a concept of shape that game would take. Game about fantasy of heroic robot saving the world from evil robots seems too silly to take itself serious. And then modifying the story to make it more complex and original doesn't really seem fun, so it should stay silly and aware of it's pompousness and I wish your game to be like that above everything else. Your graphics looks nice, especially the backgrounds. Sprite of the Guy could use some polish but is already great in a way. So everything is possible for you, I'll be checking your stuff occasionally.

(I could've missed an error or two, don't be picky about it :D)

  2. Thank you for the support! I know it's been a while since I updated, but, unfortunately, the project does have to be put behind schoolwork on the priority list :(

The story is a little more complex than "robots fighting robots", so it can be taken a little more seriously (although I won't be trying to preach, mind you!) The characters are actually human-robot hybrids, in a world where such things are growing common. The mixture of realistic and human with synthetic and cybernetic is something I want to explore, hence the blocky graphics. I would -like- to have the art style and music be very obviously fake and computery, while sound effects and characters very human. I'd also like to have the story be something you can really get into, and see the darker side of things (most of it will be presented in an indirect manner), or you can just ignore it and take it as a light hearted Mega Man style game. Of course, these are just my goals, and who knows if I'll attain them :)

Thanks for the comments on the graphics so far, though! I'm really not a very talented sprite artist, and after having toyed with them for a while, have huge respect for those whom are so good at it. I'm trying to get better, but it's hard to feel your way through it. I also, cannot, for the life of me, make female sprites, which is a problem, since some of the character designs planned are female bosses...

I look forward to any critique you can give me, and I hope it can make the final result just that much better!

  3. Sup. Well... there's not much I can critique yet. If you're going to make deep story that's ok too, seems promising. And the sprite looks megamanish and it's really fine that way. I don't think you need any help. If you succeed in making that game alone, the satisfaction will be far greater and all in all it's your ambition to make that game. But if you stuck with MMF2 (it can be annoying sometimes) I could try to help you figure it out. I played around with it (and it's predecessors) for some time so maybe my experience can be of use.

Oh yeah, I'd forgot. Don't take my advices too seriously. I like to butt in other peoples ideas modifying them as I see fit (my GF is one poor soul) but I know I'm no expert so... please be distant with most of my statements.
